Duo Galeon and RTÉ lyric fm’s Vlad Smishkewych take you on a journey across history, time, and place as they steer the ship of the imagination from Galway to Galicia, Cork to Cádiz, and Dublin to Donostia. With the Cantabrian Sea and Camino de Santiago as geographical backdrops to these musical journeys, Duo Galeon and Vlad weave together historical events, tying in backstories that bring these musical soundscapes to life. Cantigas de Santa Maria, Renaissance romances and villancicos, and over six centuries of music from court and countryside will map the myriad historical ties that connect Ireland and Spain.
Duo Galeon was founded in 2015 by Vsevolod Sadovyi and Snezhana Rybalska. In colourful and eclectic ways, they intertwine musical roots with reconstructions of historical sources using medieval codices and dance collections from across Europe, as modern musical pilgrims across places, cultures, and epochs.
Vlad Smishkewych has enjoyed a performing career in early and contemporary music, and is known to Irish radio listeners as the host and researcher of Vox Nostra, RTÉ lyric fm’s Sunday morning Early Music show. He is a founding codirector of the Limerick Early Music Festival and a producer at Now and Then Media.
This event is part of the Dublin Festival of History.
